Monaco

Atelier Adam Nathaniel Furman

The Monaco Units are a trio of one-off pieces manufactured in London, and made of painted tulipwood, mdf and steel.

They were designed immediately following the conclusion of my residency at the British School at Rome as the winner of the 2014-15 UK Rome Prize for Architecture, during which I explored the coming together in that city of global cultures, glitz and consumerism, with the most ancient and resonant of architectural and religious traditions.

In the same spirit of duality, these pieces were simultaneously inspired by the classically weighty and serious architecture of 1930s Rome, as well as the flashiness and gaiety of Italy and the Italian Riviera in the 1950s and 60s, with all its pastelle colours, clean lines and sense of mischief.

A little bit of 1930s Rome -in drag- for your living-room.
